REDEFINING PRESENCE

Repping Disability

Destiny: A Star is Reborn does more to advance the platforming of paraplegic actors than most films till date. Like one of history's greatest filmmakers Satyajit Ray who cast real characters in the Apu Trilogy — one of the most acclaimed films of all time — SØHØ cast real-life paraplegic MJ Baek in a key role where his own disability is an essential part of his backstory. What's more is that SØHØ avoids all the sympathy charity case tropes and instead shows Baek as a debonair, confident CEO of Destiny Records who is proud of his independence who lives by the motto "if an able bodies person has a team of assistants, he looks cool, but if a disabled person has an entourage, it looks like he is an invalid in need of caregivers". Paraplegic actors are among the least represented and most marginalized and this film shatters such stereotypes with applomb.

AOne of the most inspirational films ever made that also deals with issues of brain surgery, PTSD, and suicidal depression.

Brain surgery, PTSD & depression

In "A Star is Born", the lead character engages in a downward spiral and ends up comitting suicide. However, in Destiny: A Star is Reborn, the lead overcomes his demons as well as the hazards of a brain injury to make a stunning comeback. For this portrayal, SØHØ visited many hospitals to ensure he could portray the conditions with nuance and Neorealism. Further SØHØ has lived with and worked with a record number of Paralympians and showcases their spirit with long shots of the use of whellchairs even in complex terrain. SØHØ also spent time with patients who were dying and therefore he ensured that these serious themes were conveyed with compassion and realism as well as pride and resolve over mere sympathy tropes.
